The launch of the partnership at the RCH on 13 December was held in conjunction with the launch of our Know the dril before you grill BBQ safety summer campaign.
It is dedicated to promoting and delivering the health benefits of humour via its Clown Doctors. Their work is based indirectly on the work of Patch Adams. International research has found laughter to have both physical and psychological benefits for children undergoing medical treatment. Treatment for burns is amongst the most painful and requires a dedicated Clown Doctor presence. The Clown Doctors receive specific training in dealing with distressed children and their families.
While burns and energy safety have an obvious connection, the partnership is also meaningful to ESV staff, many of whom are parents who have attended the hospital with their own children for various reasons. According to ESV statistics there were as many as one barbecue fire a day during the summer months. The Humour Foundation has a fundraising strategy in place for its Clown Doctors program, which is continuously reviewed to ensure maximum return on investment.
We do this so that we can ensure programs can keep being delivered sustainably into the future. A big part of our fundraising is the face-to-face, door-to-door and telemarketing campaigns we conduct year round. For these campaigns we engage external agencies that can provide us with highly-trained fundraisers in a cost-effective way.
These fundraisers are easy to recognise, as they wear either a Clown Doctor coat or a t-shirt with our logo, and carry ID badges with their name and the name of their agency on it. At any given time, we can also have numerous individual volunteers, community groups and schools fundraising for us in their communities.
Each must have a written authority to fundraise issued by The Humour Foundation, and should be able to produce this at your request. If you have doubts about a Clown Doctors fundraiser, please call us on 02 and we will happily check their legitimacy for you. As a professional organisation with accountability and integrity we:.
International research has demonstrated the physiological and psychological benefits of laughter to health and well-being, and this underpins our evidence based practice. For instance, research suggests that humour may lower blood pressure and release endorphins. Laughter is also proven to improve circulation, stimulate the nervous system, heighten the immune system and make the heart stronger.
We continually measure our impact. Further, where evidence is limited, we are at the forefront of driving new understanding of our work. We are also currently funding a ground breaking PhD investigating the impact of the Clown Doctors program in hospital. What is The Humour Foundation?
Who are the Clown Doctors? Where are the Clown Doctors? Do host hospitals pay for Clown Doctors to visit? What hospitals do Clown Doctors visit regularly? Are Clown Doctors only for children? How many people benefit? You are away from family, friends and the comfort of your home — subjected to poking, prodding, tests and painful treatments.
You also have no say over this. Clown Doctors are able to take some of this away and make hospital an OK place to be! They assist in the emotional healing and empowerment of patients and ease the stress of their families and hospital staff.
