Watch options. Storyline Edit. Three ordinary teenage girls discover a moon pool on Mako Island that turns them into extraordinary mermaids with special powers over water on the night of a full moon. They must never look in the moon's eye or there will be side effects for each of them.
Do you believe in mermaids? Did you know Edit. Trivia The actresses put full-cream milk in their eyes to help them keep their eyes open underwater. A full moon in conjunction with a rare planetary alignment calls the girls to the moon pool at Mako Island where their powers and abilities are greatly augmented and strengthened to higher power levels.
The second season revolves around the arrival of a new girl, Charlotte Watsford , who has just moved to the neighborhood and who, since from the start, develops an attraction for Lewis. After Charlotte sees a film of her grandmother Gracie as a mermaid she meets Max Hamilton who was once romantically involved with Gracie.
Happy to have met his lover's granddaughter he tells her about the previous mermaids and of Mako Island. Charlotte travels to the moon pool during a full moon and becomes the fourth mermaid in possession of all the girls' powers and abilities.
Believing herself superior as the one "true mermaid" she and the girls become sworn enemies. This conflict results in a confrontation, during an especially strong and powerful full moon, which ends with Charlotte being permanently stripped of her mermaid powers, abilities, and mermaid form.
The girls also have romantic entanglements. Cleo breaks up with Lewis for being too clingy and protective after which he dates Charlotte. Rikki and Zane start dating again after breaking up during the series one finale.
Emma meets Ash and flirts, but the guy is frustrated by all the secrets that she is constantly hiding. Eventually Emma confesses to him be a mermaid. Meanwhile, Lewis, is sad because of the conflict between her friends and Charlotte, but in the end he comes to the conclusion that his loyalty is to girls, and in particular to Cleo. Lewis decides to break-up with Charlotte and to resume his relationship with Cleo.
One nice thing however is that Charlotte introduced in season 2 is refreshingly healthy in size for a TV actress. She is less slim than the other girls and in a healthy athletic way. On the flip side, Cleo gets very thin in this season, near skeletal - this disturbed us - she really looked ill; but Charlotte is a nice counter to this.
In season 1, all three girls are relatively healthy and natural. The main hang out for the show is a fresh juice shop. It was a shame the writers and producers took this show from what could have been a really healthy show about healthy girls and turned it into a run of the mill teen soap opera. It was fun to watch for a while but, for us, it lost its appeal. We can, however, highly recommend the spin off - Mako Mermaids! See my review for that - it's a much better choice for young viewers!
Had useful details. Adult Written by BrooklynMom1 June 7, Great for Tweens I love this show for my 8 year old daughter. She adores it and it stimulates lots of imaginative play. Compared with all the Disney and Nick programs, these girls are stellar role modes. There isn't constant sarcasm like is typical in other tween shows like Hannah Montana etc. The characters are not boy crazy all the time but do have nice tame relationships--a little hand holding or a chaste kiss. It is a good introduction to the idea of boyfriends.
And Lewis would be the boyfriend I would want for my daughter when she turns into a teen. The girls wear clothes that real teens would wear--not 3 inch heels or have body parts hanging out. In the last season Bella's bikini is a little revealing but all in all pretty tame.
There is also not a big consumerism message, the girls are not always going to the mall or talking about a phone or outfit they want. It is kinda goofy and makes no sense that their clothes disappear when they jump in the water but hey, it is for kids. Adult Written by Glenis June 8, I think it really depends on the child i let my 17 year old daughter when she was 7 years old watch it however my daughter was really mature and was aware not to imitate what she sees on tv there isnt really anything bad there is dating and kissing and dating and cleo can be mean to her younger sister which could be a bad example for children with younger siblings my daughter didnt really pay attention to the kissing andt carrys a good message about friendship and looking out for your friends aswell as helping others and lewis is the type of guy i would want my daughters dating my 11 year old daughter has now started watching it which i am more then happy about.
Adult Written by Effie Anastasia B. April 23, Good and fun 7 and up but its ok for younger with supervision I watched it when i was 7 or 8 in or 14 with my sis it is fun and they can all relate from 10 years old and on. Very fun and a little bit more for 7 years than 6 cause some more mature parts. Parent Written by MonicaMom September 23, Now at 12 years old she still enjoys it and I'm glad! Adult Written by Catholicmom February 19, From a wary Catholic Mother This is a great show, it sends a positive message of faith in ones self and friends, and honor of thy mother and father.
The character Emma honors her parents rules greatly and expresses a no lying policy with her whole family. She is responsible and polite to her brother and others.
Cleo is the sensitive one who has a off and on boyfriend who respects her and is appropriate. She honors her father who is very protective. Rikki show a little rebellion and is scene as a bit of comic relief. She helps the others come out of their shell in an appropriate way and try new things.
Great show, I am a Catholic mother with a teen daughter and deem this show to have a great message.
